Abstract: Reliable estimates of the strength and deformation characteristics of rock masses are required for almost any form of rock engineering design. In 1999 a down-hole large-scale triaxial testing apparatus was developed to directly measure stress and strain relationships of the rock masses (Tani et al., 2003). But due to large specimen size and complicated measurement system, loading test in deep ground was considered as too costly and impossible on practical level. So a new triaxial cell have been designed and developed in smaller size in 2006 (Ikenoya, 2006). Although measurement of the mechanical properties of model material by the new cell was successful, testing in the borehole was not attempted due to difficulty in applying the axial load to the specimen. In addition, since air pressure had been used for confining pressure due to insulation problems, the maximum confining pressure was limited to no higher than 0.7 MPa. So new improvements were made to eliminate the existence problems, and a down-hole in-situ triaxial system is presented to be suitable in deep rock mass with reasonable cost.
