Abstract: Application of serial intravascular ultrasound imaging within the coronary arteries enables characterization of the factors associated with progression of atherosclerotic plaque. Integration into clinical trials has enabled determination of the impact of medical therapies on coronary disease. These trials have provided important insights into the effects of lipid-modifying agents currently used in clinical practice and of experimental agents at early stages of clinical development. The results of these trials are reviewed.
