Abstract: AIM: Identify a range of issues that emerge when dog owners are asked to reflect on their experiences of having a dog neutered and to identify areas for potential innovative and user-focussed veterinary service provision. OBJECTIVE Identify attitudes, experiences and outcomes of the dog neutering procedure for owners in order to inform the veterinary profession regarding client perspectives in South Australia. METHODS: This study gathered qualitative data from a survey of 49 dog owners who experienced having their dog neutered. Survey questions were based on Osterwalder’s value proposition design framework. Textual data obtained were grouped into themes and examined for similarities and differences between participant demographics and frequency of different response themes. RESULTS: Cost was the most commonly identified negative aspect of dog neutering. However, in terms of desired and required outcomes of dog neutering, results show that although lower cost is desired, it did not feature as a required outcome. Rather, required outcomes focussed on animal welfare and wellbeing, such as pain relief. Owner gender was associated with differences in attitudes and experiences: females were found to have more emotive concerns and males had more practical concerns. Most participants were unaware of potential complications and side effects associated with neutering. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, these pet owners were more concerned about pet welfare and wellbeing during and after the neutering procedure, rather than the cost of the procedure. As respondents were generally unaware of potential complications of neutering, this study identified a need to improve client education, presenting an opportunity for veterinary teams to build trust by helping clients understand the neutering procedure. Future research should examine the issue of better informing veterinary clients about the neutering procedure and how veterinarians may improve the delivery of required information.
