The aim of this review is to summarise and critique current knowledge in psychology on Major Depressive Disorder and its associated symptoms throughout adolescence. Depression occurring during this critical period of vulnerability is associated with the risk of long-term negative consequences at both subclinical and diagnostic levels. The progression of depression symptom development, differences in symptom presentation, overall trends in population prevalence, and heterogeneity in longitudinal patterns are examined. Methodological challenges in conducting surveys and longitudinal research with adolescent populations are discussed, and recommendations for future research are made in light of their application in developing and strengthening intervention programsen
