Title: Gender and forest degradation : a case study in two villages in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia / by Mujiyani.
Author: Mujiyani
Issue Date: 2001
School/Discipline: Dept. of Geography and Environmental Studies
Abstract: This study examines the impact of forest degradation on the social structure of a community, especially on gender roles. The study was conducted in 1996-1997 in Sempur and Timbenuh, two dusun in East Lombok, where the forest is their main source of livelihood. Both dusun experienced rapid social change caused by competition for access to forest resources, government monoculture policy (cinnamon) and the declaration of the forest as a protected area. As forest resources became less available, men in Sempur were forced to migrate to look for work or walk long distances and women tended to replace men's roles. Sempur is compared to Timbenuh where people had easier access to forest resources.
