Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop a technique for the simultaneous planar measurement of velocity and scalar concentration in an air flow by means of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) of acetone vapour. The experimental method is detailed, and applied to an axisymmetric jet of Reynolds number 6500 issuing from a smooth contraction. These results show that this technique is effective, and demonstrates high potential for effective simultaneous measurement of the velocity and concentration distributions in complex air flows.
