Abstract: The article provides information on a study which investigated the challenges presented by opioid-tolerant patients undergoing acute pain management. The opioid prescribing trends are examined and the mechanisms underlying opioid tolerance and opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH) and their clinical implications are discussed. Also explored are the acute pain management options in opioid-tolerant patients.
