Abstract

Paper on marriage laws, customs, etc. of aborigines in their relation to women (given to Dr Jull to be read before the Medical Congress at Glasgow It contains a discussion of the differences between circumcised and uncircumcised people, the northern division of natives between East Kimberley and Jurien Bay and the southern division south of the De Grey River to about Point Malcolm. There is a description of the stages of a girl’s life up to marriage and giving birth, including subincision (also the male operation), manner of sexual intercourse between natives (described in Latin) and customs of intercourse at annual gatherings in north and south, where, to prevent inbreeding, wives and husbands cohabited with the visitors to the region.
