Abstract: | The Australian and New Zealand legal and ethical frameworks for the use of animals for research, teaching, and testing are underpinned by the principles of prevention of cruelty, duty-of-care, and Russell and Burch's 3Rs principles of humane animal use (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). The Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and the New Zealand Good Practice Guide for the use of animals in research, testing, and teaching provide the detailed information required by scientific institutions, personnel, and Animal Ethics Committees to ensure a consistent and humane standard of animal care and scientific use. © 2014 Elsevier Inc.
