Abstract: Established in the 1870s, The University of Adelaide built its first building on North Terrace in the early 1880s. Over the following decades the North Terrace site expanded across to Frome Road and down to Victoria Drive facing the River Torrens. This is the story of its development and of the people who played a role in it. The Spirit of Knowledge not only describes the influence of architects and planners, but also of the academics, administrators and students whose lives were centred at the University of Adelaide. Richly illustrated in full colour, and accompanied by a fully-documented text, this book takes readers on a journey of discovery through the evolution of one of South Australia’s most notable institutions.
