Title: North meets South - East meets West: a personal accommodation of divergent aesthetic, cultural and technological compositional approaches: a portfolio of four compositions and exegesis.
Author: Brophy, Gerard Norman
Issue Date: 2014
School/Discipline: Elder Conservatorium of Music
Abstract: This submission presents the four works composed during the research period. The exegesis outlines the aesthetic and technical journey undertaken, and examines the aesthetic and technical challenges encountered during that journey. The artistic implications of melding Western and non-Western cultures, together with the meeting of conventional compositional praxis and technological innovations, are evaluated for their impact on the resultant portfolio of compositions. To that end, each of the four works, in addition to one offered as a point of reference, are analysed for traces of this North-South, East-West dynamic, and its future creative potential for the candidate, and composition in general.
