Abstract

This thesis characterises a mycorrhiza-defective tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) mutant, rmc, with respect to fungal colonisation patterns and plant defence reactions during interactions with different species of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, root fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani and binucleate Rhizoctonia (a fungal parasite that colonises roots without causing disease). The results suggest that the mutated gene in rmc is involved in the regulation of recognition and plant defence responses in the establishment of AM symbioses.
