Abstract
A number of organisations undertaking business in South Australia (SA) use spatial information beneficially for the management of Indigenous lands and waters, particularly in conjunction with Geographical Information Systems (GIS). These organisations believe further opportunities exist for research into spatial information collaboration, especially promoting working and engaging with Indigenous people. This paper provides details of initiatives such as meetings, usage assessment and a workshop involving these organisations during 2008. The initiative stimulated increased dialogue, gauged respective GIS usage and ascertained future developmental areas for Indigenous spatial information. The paper concludes with three major findings i.e. the ambiguity with regards to the understanding of spatial information and GIS, the analytical capabilities of GIS require extension to realise the full potential of GIS, and issues, such as data security surrounding the use of Indigenous spatial information, need addressing.
