Abstract
This paper discusses the results of an online electronic travel behaviour survey of office commuters. The survey incorporated two case studies with a view to comparing the travel related energy and carbon dioxide emissions for office commuters working at a suburban office park, "Technology Park" in the middle distant northern Adelaide suburb of Mawson Lakes and Adelaide City Centre that was conducted in late 2006 in Adelaide, Australia, a city of approximately 1.1 million people. The survey findings have been used to propose a travel energy and emissions 5 star rating scheme for the purposes of encouraging through the planning development assessment and approval process, environmentally sustainable urban commuting office developments in three types of urban settings that are typical of Australian and western cities: (1) C.B.D. or major metropolitan regional locations; (2) suburban transit interchange nodes; and (3) suburban settings.
