Description
The project is located within the Glenside Campus cultural precinct; an area of potent historical significance and rich remnant architectural fabric. The South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC) has relocated here, sharing the site with more than 30 South Australian screen businesses. The studios aim to satisfy a niche market of projects with budgets up to $30M. A range of incentives have been developed specifically to encourage collaboration with SA companies and the site was to be designed to showcase the recognised talent of existing companies, as well as inspire and represent a future generation of collaborators. The design challenges involved sensitivity to the historic site and its remnant fabric: How can the existing buildings accommodate the rigorous technical and spatial requirements of new film production studios? How can the project be a model of adaptive reuse that highlights the significant qualities of existing buildings and site, while creating a landmark home for a fast-evolving current industry seeking to attract new business and talent? This needed to be considered from the site scale, to internal volumes for sound stages down to smaller post-production studios. The project required detailed initial analysis and documentation, site masterplanning that reflects original layouts yet permits access and circulation for large vehicles and facilitates occupant collaborations. It included adaptive reuse of key buildings and provision of new structures.
