Abstract

Strategies and conceptualisations are needed that enable those that have a requirement, but not the desire, to teach online, to make the most of virtual environments’ capacity to develop higher order thinking skills. This paper presents findings from a scoping review to understand factors that influence students’ cognitive presence in online learning contexts within the Community of Inquiry literature. Summary of findings from a scoping review are presented alongside additional findings and recommendations for strategies to build sustainable and meaningful online learning communities in higher education.
