Abstract

With this first methodological chapter, I begin with the most exploratory generic approach to qualitative research: qualitative descriptive. It is the least sophisticated approach with regards to epistemological stance as there is no alignment to a particular theoretical orientation. However, just because it is generic and the least theoretically sophisticated, do not mistakenly think it is simple! When novices begin their foray into the world of qualitative research, this is often the approach chosen as there is possibly a less steep learning curve than some of the methodological approaches that follow in later chapters. However, the elegant simplicity of a quality study belies the thinking and planning required for data collection, analysis, and presentation of the findings.
