Abstract

The interaction of linear polyphosphates with the surface of zincite has been studied. Through in situ infrared spectroscopy studies and a thermodynamic analysis of adsorption data, it has been shown that polyphosphates adsorb to zincite via bidentate ligand formation and electrostatic forces. The effect of dissolution of zincite has been addressed. Due to the solubility of zincite, polyphosphates form zinc-phosphate solution complexes which may precipitate on the surface of zincite. The solubility of these complexes is pH dependent. Rheological and electrophoretic mobility measurements have been used to demonstrate the effect of these precipitates on the interparticle forces. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
