Abstract
Peron’s Tree Frog School, The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), and the University of South Australia (UniSA) collaborated in a research partnership with the aims of improving teacher capacity in the teaching of mathematics and hence reducing students’ mathematics anxiety, increasing student enjoyment of mathematics, improving student outcomes in formal assessment, and assisting students to develop effective and transferrable STEM practices.
This report outlines this project which took place between Term 4 2022 and Term 4 2023 and describes practical approaches that were adopted by teachers to increase independence of learning while at the same time increasing enjoyment of mathematics and decreasing learning anxiety. During the project, the researcher visited the school on eight occasions and led five professional learning sessions with teachers. Student data collections were facilitated on three occasions, resulting in 273 students contributing data to the project, although the response rate during April 2023 was very low.
