Abstract

Utilization of near surface mounted steel bars is one of the promising techniques for flexure strengthening of RC beams. This paper aims to study the behavior and performance of near surface mounted steel bars as a flexure retrofitting technique for RC beams through finite element analysis. The main focus was to improve the stiffness of the beams subjected to flexure by welding the NSM bars at the beam soffit with the stirrups. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed by using ABAQUS. At first, the model was validated in order to check the accuracy and then, the validated model was applied to the retrofitted beams. Parametric study was also performed in this study considering the variation of bar diameters and bar numbers. The investigation shows that the NSM bars can improve the load capacity as well as the stiffness of the beam. The ultimate load capacity was improved as much as 1.64 times by providing the 80% NSM reinforcement of the tensile bars and the respective stiffness was improved 2.24 times the reference beam.
