Abstract
This chapter reviews the basic structural framework for sport governance in countries using a federal form of governance reliant on a community club and regional based network from which the system of governance has historically evolved. Australia receives the majority of focus within this chapter, as the federal model of governance has long been associated with the manner in which sport is governed in Australia and the majority of research in this area has been undertaken in Australia. The chapter also reviews research shaping and influencing the transition from a delegate form of board composition to more independent forms of director representation and the issues associated with each model. The delegate system has been closely associated with the federal model and only in recent years has a change to more independent board composition incorporating key skillsets become commonplace within the industry. Finally, the chapter also compares the federal form of governance to other political systems where sport governance structures have evolved in different forms including those within unitary nations and governance within professional sport codes.
