Abstract
MEL Consultants Pty Ltd has carried out the full bridge aeroelastic model tests in the large
wind tunnel at Monash University for the Stonecutters Bridge for the Highways Department of
the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. The 1/200 scale
model measurements have shown that the vertical dynamic response of the deck is very
sensitive to turbulence intensity. From measurements for the critical direction with wind normal
to the bridge deck with approach wind flows of turbulence intensity of 0.17, 0.13 and 0.11 at
deck level, namely from hilly terrain, sea terrain and smooth terrain respectively, the vertical
response of the centre of the span is shown to vary with turbulence intensity to approximately
the power of 2.3 which highlights the importance of turbulence factors in both wind tunnel
studies and analytical methods in predicting the full scale bridge response due to wind action.
