Abstract
Many of the personal and social challenges education seeks to address are highly complex and do not respond to simple interventions. Women’s participation in the so-called STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics provides a good example of this.
Simple intervention seeking to make STEM more interesting to girls have had only limited impact, and researchers have increasingly sought to understand the influence of more complex factors such as self-efficacy and creativity.
