Abstract

The word ‘Indigenous’ has developed a varied and complex meaning and significance in many parts of the world over recent decades, particularly as it pertains to people. The word itself has evolved from the Latin indigena, meaning ‘sprung from the land, native’, and in use as a noun as ‘a native’, literally ‘in-born’, or ‘born in (a place)’ (Online Etymology Dictionary, 2020). In contemporary society, it has evolved into a complex conflation of identity and the economic, legal and political systems that shape western modernity. This complexity is magnified in the face of colonization of many countries that are home to Indigenous groups. The diversity of not only the groups themselves, but also their experiences of colonization, create a multitude of issues rooted in this history. This has emerged as a relevant and critical issue for tourism development with the increase in demand for Indigenous tourism products and experiences (see the entry ‘Indigenous Tourism’ in this Encyclopedia).
