Abstract
This chapter describes the underpinning theory and principles of networked learning, a research area in e-learning. The claim we make is that networked learning offers a different way of thinking about the relationships between digital and networked technologies and the processes of learning and education. The chapter begins with a definition and sets out some of the key contributions made by this field and the communities and networks that have arisen around its use. The chapter stresses the flexibility and resilience of the phrase ‘networked learning’ and its ability to include researchers and practitioners from different traditions.
