Abstract

A series of studies on the surfaces of silica, E-glass fibers, metal oxides and oxidized metals subjected to reaction with various adsorbates, reactive low temperature plasmas and thin oxide films deposited by sol-gel techniques are described. The objectives of the surface modification have included imparting hydrophobicity, chemical compatibility with composite matrices, corrosion passivation and electrical insulation. The mechanisms of surface modification, and particularly bonding at the reaction interface, have been elucidated using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high resolution scanning electron microscopy and scanning Auger spectroscopy.
