Abstract
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) predisposes offspring to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease in adult life. IUGR can occur because of maternal under nutrition whereby there is a reduction in fetal supply of substrates such as glucose. In utero exposure to maternal under nutrition is linked to altered fetal cardiac metabolism and undernutrition in late gestation (LGUN) upregulates cardiac remodelling genes in the fetal right ventricle (RV). We hypothesised that LGUN would increase expression of cardiac remodeling genes and alter metabolism in the fetal left ventricle (LV) and that this would be corrected by a direct fetal glucose infusion.
