Abstract

Gender relations are shaped by care arrangements in all societies – given women’s greater responsibility for care, relative to men’s. Care regimes shape gender regimes and vice versa. This article considers the linkages between gender equality and early-childhood education and care arrangements – contrasting outcomes in different places by means of some examples. The prospects for gender equality and the reality of choice for women around work and care arrangements are shaped by particular social, cultural, and institutional arrangements. The issue of international chains linking work and carers in different countries are also considered.
