Abstract

This article reviews the state of art of the different ways in which has been addressed the problem of designing modular robots mechanically efficient. It is made a special emphasis in the design of the module, which is the principal element of a modular robotic system, since it has all sensors, actuators and processors, it is the base of the whole characteristics of the robot, because the system itself is a group of modules linked in a specific configuration. According to this, it is presented the two main modular robotic systems based on their kind of module: homogeneous systems and heterogeneous systems. Finally it is presented the design of Mechatronic Robot (MECABOT), a self-reconfigurable homogeneous modular robot made for urban search and rescue operations (USAR), developed by DAVINCI research group at Universidad Militar Nueva Granada.
