Abstract
Local area traffic management (LATM) describes a range of traffic engineering measures applied to the planning and management of traffic movement in local areas (neighbourhoods). It is generally applied as remedial treatments for local street networks, usually but not always in residential precincts, which are experiencing adverse traffic impacts such as excessive volumes of traffic and high travel speeds. LATM often involves the use of physical devices, streetscape design treatments, and other measures (e.g., regulatory measures including lower speeds limits and turning restrictions), aimed at reducing through traffic movements and controlling vehicle speeds. More broadly it may be seen as a process used to plan and control the traffic usage of a local street network to achieve improvements in the residential environment of the local area, meeting goals for that end determined by relevant stakeholders.
