Abstract
Expansive soil, also referred to as reactive soil in Australia, has the potential for dramatic volume change upon moisture change. The lightweight and shallow structures, such as pavements, on these soils are subjected to soil movement due to their volume change. Among different stabilising measures for the reactive soil, the use of geosynthetics is one of the economically viable options. As part of this study, the performance of two road sections with two different geosynthetic configurations was compared with the control section constructed on expansive soil. The road sections were periodically surveyed and measured for cracks and defects, as well as the international roughness index (IRI).
The performances were analysed based on measured metrics with the potential soil movement using the Australian Standard, AS 2870 approach. The impact of higher values of reactivity and the presence of trees were seen in the performance. Variation in IRI values also shadowed monthly precipitation variation in one of the sections of the trial road site. Overall, the use of geosynthetics appeared to withstand the effects of ground movement due to environmental loading.
