Abstract

Pain and sport have an odd relationship. On one hand, sportspeople frequentlypush through “pain barriers”as if pain had little or no relationship toinjured tissues. Yet on the other hand, pain level is regularly used as a returnto field indicator suggesting a directtissue injury-pain relationship. On thepath to recovery, athletes and their supportstaff will often focus on the “sorebit” via rubbing, poking, injecting andthinking about it. Depending on thesport and the player, the painful areacan make newspaper headlines and bethe focus of national discussion. But ongame day the athlete will then do theirbest to forget about it during play.
