Abstract

This case study outlines how asynchronous polling can provide social connection to students that cannot attend synchronous tutorials. Across one year, four cohorts of fully online students engaged with asynchronous polls in ‘Foundations of Psychology’ (Graduate Diploma in Psychology, The University of Adelaide, Australia). While discussion boards traditionally served as our primary tool for building an asynchronous community, their low engagement rates (Farrell & Brunton, 2020) led us to explore alternative approaches. In response, we shifted our focus to integrating asynchronous polling tools like the H5P 'Multipoll' into our Canvas modules. Multipoll is offered as a part of the package for those who use H5P as SaaS (Software as a Service). These polls were developed over eight weeks in July/August 2023. The collaborative effort involved a Learning Designer, Educational Technologist, and Subject Matter Expert, with the aim of fostering social presence (Maddrell, 2020) and deepening student engagement with course content.
