Abstract

Efforts to develop cheaper and more effective vaccines against Streptococcus pneumoniae have been greatly facilitated by access to the genome sequence for this organism. Targeted searches of the genome sequence, as well as techniques to identify genes essential for survival of the pathogen in vivo, have yielded promising new candidate vaccine antigens.
