Abstract
This chapter explores the challenges that exist around defining and enumerating homelessness in China, summarising the research on the nature and extent of the experience. China has tended to identify specific subgroups who lack stable accommodation and who live rough but it does not have a formal definition of homelessness and nor does it collect national level data on homelessness, although some data on service use by people experiencing homelessness are recorded. Child homelessness, including street children, have been reported in the past but a series of policy responses and efforts to enhance child protection systems have been put in place to prevent this. Some data suggest that homelessness may be a significant social problem but more research and information are needed to understand the patterns within Chinese homelessness.
