Abstract

In this chapter, the role of thin film coatings in cell culture is reviewed. Covering normal mammalian cells and stem cells, the role of surface modification is discussed, and some of the techniques used to produce cell culture surfaces are described. The role of chemical functionalization, addition of ligands and the use of surface patterning approaches are explained, and the major challenges associated with culturing different types of stem cells are discussed. We also speculate on the future outlook for novel surface treatments in this field.
