Abstract

This paper designs a new excitation controller for the synchronous generator in a simple power network by combining the concept of the partial feedback linearization and backstepping control schemes. The proposed partial feedback linearizing backstepping excitation controller is designed to enhance the transient stability under major disturbances. The seventh-order dynamical model of the synchronous generator in a simple power system in the form of a single machine infinite bus is considered to design the proposed controller. Here, the partial feedback linearization scheme is employed to linearize the seventh-order model into a third-order partial feedback linearized system that does not rely on operating conditions. At the same time, the dynamic properties those are not transformed during the feedback linearization process are analyzed in order to make sure that these do not affect the overall stability. Finally, the backstepping scheme is applied to determine the excitation control input by guaranteeing the convergence of the transformed states for partial feedback linearized system. Simulation studies with three line-to-ground faults at different locations, are conducted to analyze the transient stability and results are compared with an excitation controller that uses only the partial feedback linearization method
