Abstract
This chapter addresses a number of issues and challenges with the current state of China’s vocational education. It identifies some basic patterns in the organisation of vocational education in China, such as matching skills between the needs of markets and vocational education, as well as combining production and education through the integration of theories and practice (with a focus on 6- to 12-month internships before graduation). The chapter argues that in contrast with the direct adoption of well-established vocational education models, these patterns take Chinese contextual issues into consideration such as uneven economic development between different regions, a large rural population, relatively insufficient investment in vocational education, and unclear division of authority in vocational education. The chapter demonstrates how China’s vocational education has borrowed ideas and models from advanced economies, and, at the same time, is implementing these with national, regional, and local characteristics. It is too early to conclude whether a single vocational education model is superior to the diversified models, given the size and national characteristics of China.
