Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the three main research streams in numerical field modeling techniques. A selection of mainly time domain approaches is discussed and their current and future developments are highlighted. While one group of researchers is focusing on improving existing techniques within their given framework, another is trying to hybridize methods, that is to combine two or more different techniques to utilize only their advantageous feature and eliminate their disadvantages. A third but increasingly attractive research direction is to investigate model order reduction techniques (MOR). MOR aims at significantly reducing the dimension of the original model’s state-space while preserving its port behavior, at least in a certain frequency range. The result is a model of significantly smaller size, which can be much better used for the extraction of system properties, equivalent circuit generation, fast frequency sweep, or circuit level simulation.
