Abstract

In Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, the intensity of rainfall during a 10 year Average Recurrence Interval (ARI) and 1 hour storm is 98 mm/hr. This is 15% greater than the intensity of equivalent storm in Darwin, Australia. The stormwater drainage system in Dhaka was designed and constructed to collect and convey runoff assuming greenfield conditions of the catchments they service. Development taking place in the urban landscape of Dhaka has led to significant flooding problems in the lower reaches of the drainage network. A proposal to introduce Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) principles into Dhaka's drainage network has been investigated. This paper explains the potential applications of soakaways for stormwater quantity control in residential areas of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
