Abstract

Diversity can be understood as the varied backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, abilities, cultures, values and lenses that comprise society and activities such as tourism. Diversity is manifested in a multitude of ways in tourism management and marketing, ranging from the diverse cultural and ecological landscapes that are tourism destinations to the varied values, perspectives and theoretical frameworks that inform tourism. Yet, regardless of the particular form that diversity takes, whether representing ethnicity, religion, race, gender, size/obesity, abilities, Indigenous peoples (seethe entry ‘Indigenous’ in this Encyclopedia),socio-economic class or non-human life forms (see figure), the importance that diversity plays in tourism is increasingly acknowledged as a key to the tourism industry’s success and resilience in the 21st century (Higgins-Desbiolles,2020)
