Abstract
The promoters of the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition were eager to ensure that the Exhibition made the right impression. To achieve that end they undertook to not only develop ornamental grounds around the Exhibition Building but also to secure fitting approaches to the site. Tha tdecision resulted in the creation of Victoria Drive along the southern bank of the Torrens Lake and the replanting of what was referred to at the time as the North Terrace esplanade. In doing so they followed international precedents and aspired to present Adelaide as a civilised and urbane city by showcasing South Australian achievements, since settlement,to the rest of the world
