Abstract

We report a compact and packaged ~1550 nm planar erbium waveguide free-running frequency comb chip laser. The gain medium is erbium ytterbium cerium co-doped fluorozirconate glass waveguide chips that have a bandwidth of up to 15 nm wide (FWMH), P=10 mW (single polarisation in polarisation maintaining fibre), and pulsewidths down to 310 fs when the cavity is configured for a 1 GHz repetition rate. The comb includes an ability to modulate the cavity length by a combined mechanical/ piezo actuator allowing tuning of the repetition rate by ~ 10 MHz. The presentation covers the unique comb architecture, spectral/ temporal characteristics, RF spectrum, phase noise and relative intensity noise.
