Abstract

This chapter reviews the litho-, chemo-, bio- and chronostratigraphic evolution from the rift–drift transition to the onset of basin closure as recorded in the various tectonic units of the Damara Orogen sensu lato. This stage of basin evolution includes the deposition of two major glaciogenic units, generally correlated with the global Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations, and well-developed cap carbonate successions, as well as the formation of oceanic crust, relics of which are present in the southern Damara Belt and the western Gariep Belt.
