Abstract
Portal frames constructed from cold-formed channel sections have been widely used for agricultural, residential and light industrial applications in Australia for many years, but rarely used in the United States or Europe. This paper examines the feasibility of using cold-formed channel portal frames in the USA and Europe, where standard sections are of lower strengths, but greater thickness and snow loads must be considered, which are not relevant in Australia. This paper compares two different size portal sheds in Australia, the USA and Europe. The comparison includes applying loads from each region's loading codes and using each region's cold-formed design codes and sections. The issue of joint design is also discussed in relation to traditional joint types and newly developed joints using self-drilling screws. The findings reveal that from a design point of view cold-formed sheds can be used in a majority of the USA and Europe but there are some limitations
