Abstract

The trauma assessment pathway (TAP) is a model for assessment and treatment decision making for children and adolescents between two and eighteen years of age who have experienced some form of trauma. The model outlines assessment and triage considerations for working with this population, as well as key components of treatment for addressing trauma in children and young people. This report is a critical review of the Assessment-Based Treatment for Traumatised Children: A Trauma Assessment Pathway therapeutic approach/framework. The critical review describes how this model operates and how it has been implemented at the Chadwick Centre in San Diego, and the feasibility of implementing this model/framework of treatments in Western Australia. The model/framework was reviewed by four psychologists experienced in treating child with trauma from child abuse and neglect. The review highlights the usefulness of distinguishing between forms of trauma, and the benefits of a symptom-based conceptualisation oriented to presentation. The model also displayed some gaps related to culturally appropriate assessment within Australia and risk assessment of this population, hence, the model could be adapted, and these components added to fit the context of working within Australia. The critical review group indicated that an integrated components model of treatment, in which multiple theoretical backgrounds and treatment modalities can be drawn upon, is the most effective in working with this population.
