Abstract
This article reports on an innovative cost effective spillway design / review procedure developed for farmers in South Eastern Australia, but which is transferrable to any other region worldwide. Dam safety policy models and guidelines for aiding Government decision-making are also provided. The procedure is quick and simple to use, yet is based on modern best practice, which is critical for avoiding legal liability. The procedure minimises cost burdens to dam owners, encourages better dam safety management and provides an acceptable level of safety assurance to downstream communities.
