But there is also a need in society for physicians or MDs with special abilities in conducting biomedical and clinical research. This special need was the reason why at the University of Maastricht a graduate-entry medical program was begun with an annual intake of 30 students. But it was not the only reason. Educational innovation and experimentation have become increasingly difficult due to the rapidly increasing enrolment in many medical programs.
