This research investigates whether or not the construct of character education supports students to flourish as active citizens within their school environment. A case study has been undertaken in a middle-years school that has applied a character education framework. The case study interrogates whether the application of a character education framework impacts on student behaviour. The research identifies whether characteristics related to both positive education and character education have emerged that indicate students are moving towards becoming active and informed citizens both within their school setting and beyond since research indicates that active civic participation at school is a valuable predictor of later civic behaviour. The findings are then evaluated through the critically reflective lens of Gert J.J. Biesta to assess the value of character education in the delivery of civics and citizenship education in an Australian setting. This research provides early indications that the development of a bespoke character education framework may lead to stronger overall wellbeing outcomes and, if implemented effectively, has the potential to move students towards the goal of active citizenship.enExploring the impacts of character education on developing citizenshipThesis
