Lawson, William, fl. 1618.2011-11-172011-11-171660http://hdl.handle.net/2440/67415Little is known of the north England horticulturalist William Lawson but the popularity of his works The Country Hous-Wifes Garden (1617) - the first such book written for novice women gardeners - and A New Orchard and Garden, first published in 1618 and reprinted eight times over the next 70 years, has made his name well-known among garden historians. The Country Hous-Wifes Garden lists in detail the herbs, flowers and vegetables that should be planted and how they should be grown, and gives several designs for knots. A New Orchard and Garden is of particular interest for its representation of the design of country 'orchards' or pleasure gardens in the Tudor period, and for Lawson's infectious enthusiasm for his subject, which has caused him to be dubbed the "Izaak Walton" of gardening writers.Scanned from the original held in Rare Books & Special Collections, Barr Smith Library.Below are several sections of the 'Now the 3rd time corrected and much enlarged' 1660 editionA new orchard and garden, or, The best way for planting, grafting, and to make any ground good for a rich orchard : particularly in the north, and generally for the whole common-wealth ... : with The country hous-wifes garden for herbs of common use ... : as also, the husbandry of bees, with their several uses and annoyances : all being the experience of forty and eight yeers labour ... / by William Lawson ; whereunto is newly added the art of propagating plants, with the true ordering of all manner of fruits, in their gathering, carrying home, and preservation.enGardening Early works to 1800.Agriculture Early works to 1800.Gardening England.Fruit-culture EnglandOrchards England.A new orchard and garden, or, The best way for planting, grafting, and to make any ground good for a rich orchard : particularly in the north, and generally for the whole common-wealth ... : with The country hous-wifes garden for herbs of common use ... : as also, the husbandry of bees, with their several uses and annoyances : all being the experience of forty and eight yeers labour ...Book chapterStrong Room 634 M345
